100% Sterilization

FOOL-PROOF STERILIZATION IN DENTAL OFFICE-A few important things to know!

a

Now days the biggest concern for any dental patient is about the sterilization techniques employed in the dental practice. Without a fool proof technique the patients are prone for deadly cross infections like HIV and Hepatitis B during the dental treatment. We give you information about how we handle our sterilization process.

THE ULTRA MODERN B-CLASS AUTO CLEVE from MELAG – GERMANY

FOR FOOL- PROOF STERILIZATION.

Dental Autoclaves

We are one of the few clinics equipped with most modern B-CLASS AUTOCLAVE from MELAG-GERMANY. With B-CALSS AUTOCLAVE you are assured of 100% sterilization of all the equipment and instruments used during your treatment procedures.

Autoclaves commonly sterilise by exposing its items to elevated temperatures of 121 to 134ºC under pressure of 15 to 30 psi, for a holding time of anywhere between three to 30 minutes. The combination of the time, temperature and steam, deliver a powerful kill rate which even the hardest of bacteria find hard to survive. This effective and yet clean method of lethality is unmatched by any of the other methods of sterilization.

However, if there is residual air in the chamber and load, it will interfere with steam-instrument contact and may compromise sterilisation. This residual air can prevent penetration of steam to the depths of the instruments leaving your sterilisation incomplete. When you load the autoclave with instruments and close the lid, there is already a lot of stale air trapped inside. For sterilisation to take place, this air needs to be effectively purged and replaced with saturated steam. To resolve this problem of purging entrapped air, normal autoclaves have a manually operated valve open till about 100ºC. Once it is closed, the pressure and temperature begins to rise. It is presumed that by this time, the entire entrapped inner air has been purged. However, tests have shown that this is not an effective method for vials, wrapped items, implants, garments and certain types of hollow ware. You can never be assured of efficient penetration of steam right inside, if you are using a regular autoclave. Even a small volume of entrapped air can compromise your sterility assurance level simply because ordinary entrapped air is a very bad conductor of heat and moisture. These pockets of air cannot conduct heat to the load with the same vigour as steam and therefore cold spots remain within the load.

The regular (type N) is suitable for sterilizing only unwrapped and solid instruments. The major concern with the N-cycle sterilizers is the non-removal of trapped air, especially air pockets in difficult-to-access areas of the instruments during displacement. Errors in packaging or overloading the sterilizer chamber can result in cool air pockets where items are not sterilized.

Type B Sterilization

The type B sterilization cycle is used to process loads that can retain air. It can sterilize solid, hollow, and porous instruments, be they wrapped or unwrapped. B-cycle involves the use of active (forced) air removal, usually by using an inbuilt vacuum pump. These pre-vacuum or Class-B sterilizers create a vacuum, thus removing air from the load prior to the chamber being pressurized with steam. This can be done from one to three times, depending on the cycle selected. This technique allows faster and more effective steam penetration throughout the entire instrument load than the regular autoclaves. You are assured of 100% safety with our sterilization technique!

Instrument Sterilization

All instruments are thoroughly washed in antiseptic solutions and wiped clean. They are the packaged into sterile pouches and vacuum sealed to prevent contamination. Our office offers a large Sterilization and Disinfection Centre utilizing the latest techniques and equipment to ensure patient safety. This Centre guarantees that all dental instruments and equipment sterilization is on par with international standards of asepsis.

Our office uses a “SEALED POUCHES” system which eliminates unnecessary handling of individual instruments by the disinfection staff which helps to eliminate exposure to the instruments. The instruments are put through a series of cleaning procedures and wrapped for final sterilization. The instruments are then placed into a digital autoclave and autoclaved at 121 degrees. At this temperature all known disease causing bacteria are known to be killed. This is the standard autoclaving procedure followed in Operation Theaters worldwide Once sterilized each pouch has a marker and are only unwrapped only during the treatment procedure.

Our office also has dental units in each treatment room which have self-contained water systems. These water systems utilize sterile water which simply means that any water going into your mouth while sitting for a procedure is sterile. These systems are flushed between patients. The system is also cleansed on a regular basis which reduces the amount of biofilm.

Surgery Up keep:

At the beginning of the day the floors are thoroughly scrubbed with scented Phenol which leaves the place clean and smelling fresh. All carpeted/non carpeted areas are meticulously cleaned with a high power vacuum cleaner to get all the dust mites out and prevent air borne infections if any. The chairs and all moving/rotating parts are sprayed with antiseptic solution and wiped clean with a soft cloth. After every patient the same procedure is followed for the chairs to prevent cross infection.

Disposable materials:

We use a fresh, new pair of gloves for every patient that is disposed of immediately after the treatment is completed. All gloves are torn as well so there is no question of whether any of them were ever used before. In addition we use disposable masks, suction tips and plastic glasses. All local anaesthetic is given from sealed syringes that are opened in front of you and disposed of immediately after treatment. We also use filtered water for rinsing your mouth during procedures.
